market (it should be a great tool for Web masters), this $1,795 camera features a color, through-the-lens viewfinder.
Equipped with a 450,000-pixel, progressive-scan CCD,
the DKC-ID1 captures images with up to 768×576 dots of resolution and up to 24-bits of color depth. Images are stored on PCMCIA Type II memory cards using JPEG compression. The 2MB
memory card bundled with the camera holds eight images in fine mode and 28 images in normal mode; a 10MB card will store 40 images in fine mode and 140 images in normal mode. A built-in SCSI-2 interface makes short work of downloading images either to your PC or to an optional MiniDisc unit.
The camera features a 12x zoom lens with macro (equivalent to a 38mm to 460mm zoom lens on a conventional 35mm camera) and can be focused either manually or automatically. Shutter speeds range from 1/15 of a second (good for low-light conditions) to 1/4,000 of a second (great for capturing brightly lit
action shots). The camera runs in full auto mode by default, but you can set it to aperture-priority mode or shutter-priority mode if you want to get creative. You can use the color LCD in the viewfinder both to frame your shots and to review pictures you’ve already taken.
A monochrome LCD panel on the back of the camera displays status information. The unit runs on a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, but it can also be powered by an AC adapter. The DKC-IDl isn’t the smallest camera on the market, but weighing just 26 ounces, it’s not the heaviest, either.
