If you believe Sony’s product designers, style is everything.
Sony’s VAIO range of notebooks have always stood out from the crowd, and the A39GP is no exception.
This “desktop replacement” unit features a stunning 17in WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) display, driven 1 by an ATI Mobility Radeon X600 with 128MB of L dedicated video memory, 512MB RAM and a 100GB SATA hard drive. There’s even room for up to -2GB of RAM should the need arise. The — Intel Pentium M 770 (2.13GHz) processor cuts smoothly through ■ complex processing tasks.
An audio port replicator bristles with four USB 2.0 ia ports, DVI and D-sub ports, S-Video, video and audio 16 in/out jacks, and an optical-out port. There are also lu connectors for the two external speakers (supplied), which deliver loud, full-bodied sound.
The notebook itself includes an additional ” three USB 2.0 ports, FireWire, Memory Stick slot s; and a DVD±RW optical drive which also supports 21 DVD-R Double Layer discs. Every connectivity base e. is covered with built-in modem and 802.11 b/g ” wireless LAN connections, as well as the standard Ethernet port.
As well as coming pre-installed with Windows XP Professional, an excellent software bundle is provided. It consists of Adobe Premiere; Adobe Photoshop Elements; Adobe Acrobat Reader 6; InterVideo WinDVD 5; Symantec Norton AntiVirus 2004; Sonic RecordNow! 7, plus a range of proprietary Sony applications.
Clearly, the VGNA39GP isn’t meant to stray too far from home. Even when not docked with the port replicator, its 40.5 x 4.5 x 28cm (WHD), 4kg bulk is a lot to carry around. Nevertheless, it won’t fail to impress as a presentation aid.
On the testbench, the VAIO proved to be a good performer, scoring a quick 4,140 in PCMarkO4. It posted a very capable 11,497 in 3DMark2001 SE Pro, showing that it can easily handle itself in older games. The only disappointment was battery life — only one hour and 21 minutes was achieved under BatteryMark 2004, although this can be bumped up to around two hours with the aggressive power-saving features enabled. This was no surprise considering the machine’s grunt.
The VGNA39GP is really a pleasure to use, bringing functionality, quality specs and plenty of spunk to carry out the tasks at hand.
