Netcomm Smart Wireless LAN

Access point $1,499, PC Card (2 pack) $599 mid-priced solution.
The NetComm Smart Wireless LAN range shares quite a few similarities with the Apple AirPort range. Both have an access point and PC Card, and both cards have the ability to communicate with each other without the need for another network connection or access point. This is great for peer-to-peer networking in small businesses or homes. Alternatively, you can connect a Smart Wireless LAN PC Card to a PC to act as the access point, the same as connecting the AirPort-ready Macs to the network.
An advantage that NetComm has over the competition is that Smart Wireless LAN products can transmit up to 2Mbps, 0.4Mbps faster than the nearest pre IEEE 802.11 rival, Proxim. The signal range of the access point is not as great as other products, coming in at approximately 100m indoors and 250m outdoors. The PC Cards themselves operate within a 70m to 80m indoor range, and up to 350m outdoors for peer-to-peer networking.
The access points can support multiple users simultaneously (no more than 20 to each access point recommended) and is easy to install and configure. For protection, there is a MAC security option which can be toggled, allowing the administrator to control which devices have and haven’t got access to the wireless network. Additionally, all the data packets sent can be encrypted.
Setting up and configuring the network is done through a simple GUI interface. The PC Cards are plug-and-play compliant, which is a blessing for those setting up a simple peer-to-peer network at home or in a small office. They come with a 10BaseT Ethernet connection for connecting an access point to an existing wired LAN.
The Smart Wireless LAN range works with Windows, Unix and Novell networks. NetComm has a one-year warranty, and an extra two years (conditional) on the product line.
