Barracuda Spam Firewall 300 BSF300a

A useful tool in protecting your network from unwanted malicious content.
Barracuda is a hardware security vendor that focuses on business desktops. Its Spam Firewall boxes are designed to offer gateway security through spam and integrated virus protection.
The BSF300a is aimed at small to medium-sized enterprises. There are several other models in the range, from the 200, which offers basic protection, up to the 800, which features clustering and is designed to protect massive networks. The 200, 300 and 400 models all ship in 1U mini rack-mount chassis, while the 600 and 800 feature 1U and 211 full-size rack-mount cases.
Installation couldn’t be simpler: connect the box to the network (between the incoming connection and the mail server) and direct mail to it. Admins looking for tight control over the network settings and filters can use the box’s built-in configuration interface, but many won’t even need to.
Core functionality is uniform across the range. Users can establish trusted source lists to help filter spam messages, scan incoming messages for viruses, and quarantine (or tag, or delete) mail with questionable content. It can also be configured to block all messages from a given domain.
This model supports 2,000 users, 250 domains, and processes up to 4 million emails per day. It has full support for Syslog, can authenticate users against Microsoft Exchange/LDAP (boosting the effectiveness of the spam filter by confirming addresses on incoming spam), and allows the administrator to establish settings and quarantine messages on a per user basis.
Admins can also specify global rules or handle messages differently for each user. In testing, a dummy mail server was set up and messages piped through the firewall. The box successfully filtered over 25,000 messages, provided only a handful of false positives, and blocked all spam and viruses.
Users pay a subscription (one, three or five years), which provides access to antispam and antivirus updates, sent directly to the box by Barracuda.
At $4,855 (plus updates), the Barracuda 300 is overkill for a small setup, but suits any medium-size business looking to protect its employees and cut down on network traffic and lost productivity through spam or virus attacks.
