Portable DVD players are a great idea, as long as you have the money. The latest portable DVD player APC has seen is the Afreey PDV-2000.
The PDV-2000 has a cheap plastic cover that can easily be pushed on to the disc. The rest of the con- ‘ struction is acceptable, 1 including the gold finish. | The 6.8in screen pr sented images acceptably and it supports audio, MP3 and VCD playback.
You can access either a credit-card-sized remote or controls built into the unit. APC suspects the remote is likely to disappear behind the sofa all too quickly. The model APC examined seemed to be region-free, but this isn’t standard. A little hunting around Net sites does reveal how to change the region strings.
The inbuilt speakers aren’t much to write home about, but the speaker output via headphones is a little
, better. The supplied bud headphones won’t set your ears on fire, but they’re acceptable. Sound output levels were generally low, which is OK for a portable unit.
The PDV-2000 supports optical and RCA output. In a neat bit of engineering, the port — for RCA output will also accept input via a switch. Output to a better screen produced predictably better results in both audio and video quality, so it would be possible to hook this up to a hotel TV, for example. Output cables are provided Battery life has always been a problem for portable devices, and especially for portable DVD players. The PDV-2000’s battery will last for over three hours. However, it takes about six hours to charge the battery fully, so you need to be prepared. What’s more worrying for a portable unit is that the snap-on battery weighs almost as much as the rest of the unit put together.
